On Vesak day (Buddha’s birthday) 29th May ’18, something happened which compelled me to pen down my thoughts.
After prayers and food we were sitting down, chatting and having a good family time. Suddenly I heard a big thunder and my brother’s dog Billy jumped and went onto the sofa. He is scared of thunder and I have seen his similar reactions, but this time it was something different which really caught my eye. He was fearful, scared, lonely and breathing really fast. I was so concerned that I went to hug him and solaced him. Seeing this my 8 year old girl came too and comforted him.
So afterwards while I was doing my meditation I had such a deepening moment. The thoughts started pouring from deep within and scene flashed in front of me where I saw scared animals trapped in cage frightened, helpless akin to Billy with heavy breathing being transported to Butcher house and it occured to me that we do Not only eat Meat but also eat their Negative emotions: fear, anger, pain and disgust. and somewhere we take their animal nature.
Love and respect each Life. They are somebody’s father, brother, mother, friend and so on. Just because they are Mute and cannot express their feelings does not mean that they have no Right to Live. Just once look into their Eyes to understand, empathise and feel their pain.
I turned Vegetarian 3 years back, like most of you I liked meat and could not live without it. Due to my spiritual practices, I felt so much of love within my heart for all the “Beings”, and the desire of eating meat just fell off. There was no inner strife but “Just Love’ .
